Breast Implant Surgery Booms In the UK

The cosmetic surgery industry is booming in the UK, according to 2012 figures which shows an increase in all procedures. A total of 43,172 surgical procedures were carried out in 2012 according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), an increase of 0.2% on the previous year.

It is important to note though that these figures are by no means comprehensive as only one cosmetic surgeon out of every three are BAAPS members. The biggest rises were seen in anti-ageing treatments such as eyelid surgery and face lifts which both saw double digit increases. Meanwhile brow lifts were up by 17% and face and neck lift procedures increased by 14%. However it remains the case that those procedures will not have as lasting an impact as cosmetic surgery, which is why those procedures are more popular.

Despite the PIP faulty breast implant scandal, breast augmentations were still the most popular procedures overall, though numbers dropped by approximately one and a half percent since 2011. That may suggest a slight impact from the PIP boob job scandal.

More than 90% of all the cosmetic surgery procedures in 2012 were done by women. For men the most popular procedures were nose jobs with 952 operations performed in 2012. Next down were breast reductions at 652, while only 11 men decided to have a breast augmentation.
